Open Letter to VIVA: JaDine deserves Quality Films

Dear VIVA,

Thank you for giving birth to James Reid and Nadine Lustre as VIVA Artists. Everyone would agree with me that 2014 wouldn’t be as exciting as it has been today without JaDine. Patronizing their tandem is one of the highlights of our 2014.

We trust VIVA on how you handle your artists having been in the industry for quite a long time. But we also believe that you put much consideration on how would the fans or people react on certain decisions or strategies that the management does. Launching JaDine last April 2014 was one of the best timing and decisions that VIVA has ever made.

However, coming from the two back-to-back movies that JaDine did, we, as their die-hard fans, tend to evaluate the career run of our idols and their reputation as movie stars. DnP is undeniably a surprising box-office hit, whereas TBYD, though it also performed well in the box office scene, it didn’t exceed the expectation that the fans had coming from the success of the first movie. The latter received a fair share of not-so-good movie reviews from critics due to its jumpy story line and direction. This has made me worried that even so JaDine performed well in terms of their acting and so, if the quality of the movie itself is below the moviegoers’ standards, that wouldn’t make sense at all.

ON JADINE’S NEXT MOVIE

Recently, VIVA Entertainment initiated a social media discussion where fans can vote for the next JaDine movie they want to see. Here are the choices:
1.)    Girlfriend for Hire
2.)    My Husband is a Mafia Boss
3.)    My Sadist Lover

On top of these three options, I also asked some of my Twitter Friends if they have suggestions other than the above-presented stories. They suggested the following:

4.)    Project Ex, Project Why and Project Z
5.)    All Over Again

I have ‘somehow’ read and studied the story lines of these five wattpad stories. Though I commend the artistry of these aspiring writers and respect the fans of the stories, I couldn’t help but observe that almost all the plots of these stories are common.

Typical Arrogant Boy meets the Palaban Lady. Typical Chick Magnet meets the Palaban / Astig Lady again. Though I see that the stories have their own kilig scenes and attacks, it’s hard not to associate it with the Cross-Eya love story or Dao Ming Xu-San Chai love story. Girlfriend for Hire might be associated with Kim Chiu and Xian Lim’s Bride for Rent due to its title (oops did I mention that the Brye’s surname is also Stanford). Project Ex, Project Why and Project Z have potential in terms of the richness of its plot, but all three still carry a common or predictable story line as their titles imply.

My Husband is a Mafia Boss is another gangster film. It’s too dark for JaDine. We don’t want another Talk Back and You’re Dead Movie, right? And we don’t want to fast forward the maturity of JaDine, like the Mr and Mrs Smith peg of Angelina and Brad Pitt. Please take note that the quality of film doesn’t depend on how many kissing scenes a story has. J (Kahit gusto ko non, pero Vote Wisely pa din.)

When I first read My Sadist Lover, I got interested reading it. But along the way, I’ve found it very heavy since the story is so heartbreaking. It’s like I would feel heavy hearted after I watched it on the big screen. It’s the same with All Over Again. It’s not that popular but both have the same theme: Broken-heartedness.

Looking at it now, I observe that moviegoers opt to watch feel-good and heartfelt movies than those with heavy story lines. Ang drama na kasi ng buhay ng mga Pilipino eh. Remember also that DRAMA is not YET the forte of JaDine.

Don’t get me wrong. I commend the writers of these stories. They have invested time for these stories and gained fans because of their story takes. But not all stories have cinematic potential. Some may be fit for Teleserye Adaptation instead of a movie adaptation. But to justify my points clearly, here are the options that I’d like to present for your considerations.

OPTION A: Petition for ORIGINAL Material

I get it. James and Nadine are the Book King and Book Queen of Philippine Movies and you don’t want to veer away from that title this early. But take note that this has pro’s and con’s. Based on previous experiences, due to wrong direction and unimpressive story treatment of a book adaptation, there’s no denying that the REPUTATION of James and Nadine as an artist has been affected.

They are the face of the film, that’s why they carry the quality of the film. They are the brands of the film so whatever comments the viewers have, the initial blame goes to the lead stars of the film. It’s on the latter part when people realized that it all boils down on the director himself.

Having an ORIGINAL Material is a good selling point as well since nobody knows the exact flow of the film. Disappointment rate wouldn’t be as high as compared with movie adaptation since there’s no expectation coming from the readers’ imagination.

This is also James’ and Nadine’ chance to prove themselves; and work with caliber directors and Star Cinema’s screen play writers.

OPTION B: Diary ng Panget 2 with a Twist

Yes Guys. I hear you! Some fans have been protesting for Diary Ng Panget 2. They missed Cross, Eya, Lory and Chad. They also missed Fab 4 – Nadine, James, Yassi and of course, Andre. I miss you Andre.
At first I didn’t entertain the idea because for me it could be a ‘downgrade’ for Nadine as EYA since she already established her image as the beautiful, rich-achiever, named SAM in TBYD. But how about a TWIST? ( Since we only have one book remaining, sorry Denny for this suggestion)

·         After GRADUATION: What if EYA became beautiful, but not as beautiful as SAM. Sakto lang. No pimples. No bad hair days. No jumpers. No sneakers. Tamang feminine lang. Tamang wardrobe makeover. She did that out of insecurity from girls running over Cross. She changed physically but not a big change, same personality still. Until she became noticeable to the eyes of other guys. Another love triangle came along. That guy fell in love with the new EYA. Conflict arises between the new guy and Cross. Jealousy issues..--- I can go on and on.. but it’s like a story about CHANGE; but at the end of the day, CROSS still chooses the PANGET EYA over the NEW EYA. ClichĂ© but at least may twist. (I am sure you guys can think of something better)

It’s hard for me to explain but a story twist as such can be effective to viewers. As much as we want to be faithful on the story line, it’s also better to provide the moviegoers something unexpected, something to watch out for, like a plot twist but of course Cross and Eya pa din in the end.. The conflict in DNP Book 4 just revolves around a showdown with Eya and the ‘other girl’ whose name I forgot. This may seem shallow once it is adapted in a movie.
DNP could be another hit as long as VIVA offers a twist in the story. Do not stick with the book itself.

OPTION C: WATTPAD STORIES but in ONE or TWO or THREE or FOUR CONDITION(s)

Since you want to live with the BOOK KING AND QUEEN TITLES of JADINEs, okay… let’s go with WATTPAD STORIES (could be the 5 options as presented above or other suggestions) but here are the conditions: (these can be applied once you start filming TBYD)

1.)    New Director – No more Direk Andoy Ranay this time. Look for other Directors, the likes of Chris Martinez, Joyce Bernal, Mae Cruz, Laurenti Dyogi, etc. Again, a change of direction is a good selling point.

2.)    No Rush – Yes we are excited; but we are not impatient. Do not fast-phase the production. Take your time. “Starting Over Again” taped for one year, and also “The Gifted” – both films earned great reviews from movie critics. So please take your time. We are not in a hurry.

3.)    Collaboration of Screen Play Writers – Allow Star Cinema Screen Play writers to collaborate with Ms Keiko Aquino. Two heads are better than one. This could address problems in terms of story treatment and poor scene by scene transitions. Get the gist and don’t make us feel again that there are hanging or cut scenes in between. Since most of the choices above are not that popular as compared with DNP and TBYD,  writers can just based the story on tho

4.)    Please the Non Readers– I have been saying this but please give a story that would please the non readers more than the fans of the book. Take note that the book fans are automatic ticket buyers.

Thank you VIVA. I hope you take into considerations the views and opinions of the fans. I am just speaking on their behalf. I know you have a lot of experience in doing this but listening to the clamors of fans won’t hurt you.

Sincerely,
JaDine Publicist

Note:

To all JaDine / Naddict / Reiders / Kehrbears, please VOTE Wisely. There you go. You have three options to choose from. If you have OPTION D, E, F… let me know. Let this be a venue for discussion. Please bear in mind that at the end of the day, no matter how popular you are, how much effort you put into it by endorsing it, it’s the QUALITY OF FILMS that really matters.

P.S. Bashing of other fandom is not allowed here.

The floor is now yours. Feel free to suggest. Who knows, this might reach VIVA.

Love you guys.

  1. I agree with some of the points stated here. The JaDine LT is their brand carrier thus when something goes wrong with the product presented to the market, they're the ones bashed about it. But I think we cannot really tell who's at fault why there are some visible gray areas on their last project. A successful movie goes hand in hand with the good work done by casts, crews and producers. Let's give credit to the hardwork done by each and everyone of them and not just fingerpoint on certain groups of people. Besides, without them, we couldnt have watched those beloved books come into life. Everyone can be better in their craft. Like for example: with a few more workshops and polishing, JaDine could be better actors/actresses. The Directors and writers should have been stern about creating the storyline and mastery of direction and asked for more time. And yes, the producers shouldnt rush into everything. Just because Jadine is the current talk of the town, they shouldnt have asked a group of people to create a project in an instant just so they could take advantage of the current fad.

A new material is good for the loveteam however since they are dubbed as the book king and queen as of the moment, I guess abscbn and viva wont let go of that, yet. Give JaDine a year or two.. Or until they became established stars on their own and have found their showbiz niche. As for the choice of books for the adaptation, I totally agree with you. Enough of those plots already! We've had enough of those stories. I dont know if you've heard or read of A&D. It's very light, different and super nakakakilig. The story is about a boy and a girl who have been bestfriends as far as they can remember. But the guy didnt know that the girl loves him already. the guy already has a girlfriend (yes, the lead male character there has a gf--different from those stick to one bad boy images we have watched already), and he only thinks of the girl as her sister slash bestfriend that he truly cares about. Reason for the lead girl to change so the guy could atleast think of her differently and turn that 'care' into 'love'. --sorry too much info hahaha. And second option for me is BTCHO. I dunno if this one can still be JaDine movie.. I think they have chosen the lead stars already or not? Well.. There goes my picks. They are my favorite popfiction books btw. Aside from DNP. ^^ I think Louisse Carreon and Aly Almario's books deserve to be in the bigscreen. But then again, these are just my opinions really. ^_^

    1. Hi. That's a good one. Glad you aired your comments here because your opinions, too, carry some good points. Totally agree with you on Team Work. It's a Causal effect actually. Time is also one of the biggest factors here. They rushed everything that's why it resulted this way. That's why I hoped that next time... They will allocate more than 2 months to work on JaDine's new film. I still love Direk Andoy as a person, though. May I have the link of the wattpad book that you are suggesting? I'll read it and might recommend it. And I also see that adapting wattpad stories is also VIVA 's career strategy for JaDine not until they have proven themselves well enough in the industry. But I hope they'll give a good treatment on the story line.

  2. OPTION C (echo echo echo) LOL...

    1. Likewise, timing is really crucial. The way they rushed things reflected when we saw the results already. So I hope VIVA will also do that Hollywood Strategy. Thanks dear!

  3. Agree ako sa mga sinabi m admin especially sa DNP sana ginawan nlang nila ng continuation yun like the The Twilight Saga and The Harry Potter parang books din na may continuation pero dapat hindi nila mamadaliin ang pag produce nun dapat pag isipan nila ng mabuti ung plots and scenes. .

    1. This proves that prepration is a big factor. Let's hope that VIVA would be wise enough this time.

  4. Just to add, A&D I think is the first english wattpad story written by a Filipino that was published. It gained also praises and followers in the US because it was written in their mother tongue. Ate Louisse also have been interviewed by Wattpad from U.S(i think new york?) because of the popularity. Besides, James needs to have a different character. And with boy-next-door goody good role model the lead male character in the book has, i believe it would be fun if they would try it out!

I researched and found out that BTCHO was already planned to become a movie eyeing on other celebrities to be casted. Nonetheless, still a good potential JaDine movie too!

    PS.
read the wattpad version of the stories not the published book! It's wayyy cooler. ^^

  5. Thank you for this one. I have already read BTCHO. Shy carlos will do the film. I am so interested to read A&D. I will recommend it once I am done reading it. Thank you so much. You are so helpful. Tweet me and i'll follow you back. Thanks!

  6. Hi new reader here. I love all the points that you've discussed and I basically agreed with everything.

As much as I love the for them to finally have an original material, like what you said, I don't think Viva and ABS-CBN (Star Cinema?) would let them do that just yet because of the title they've given these two. Actually I think the reason they published My App Boyfie on Wattpad is to go along with the said title. Wattpad is an awesome site/app and you can probably get almost any type of stories from there, but you really have to browse longer to find the best one. And if they finally get a good story from there, I hope it has characters that are different from what JaDine have already portrayed on the previous movies. I don't want them to be typecast-ed with these roles/stories.

I would love love love to have DNP2! I haven't finished reading the whole series but it's really funny and it translated very well on the big screen. Rom-com fits these two and they definitely deliver. Gusto ko lang din talaga ng rom-com para sa kanila, because I think it's a sure way to capture the attention and hearts of people, fan or non-fan at that.

Also, please please continue doing this, writing criticisms and opinions regarding JaDine. Maraming fans na bata pa at medyo immature (not regards sa ugali, more on sa way of thinking), magandang mai-share ang mga ganitong bagay sa kanila para maging mas open-minded sila. At syempre para sana maiparating natin sa management yung thoughts and concerns natin (at sana makinig sila). More power to you and to JaDine of course :)

  7. OPTION D:
James and Nadine can still be the "Book King and Book Queen of Philippine Movies" even if they adapt from a non-wattpad stories. Take into consideration Precious Hearts Romance Pocketbooks. I have read a lot of rom-com stories that made me laugh and inlove kasi eto talaga ang binibili at binabasa ko.
Buti nga yun kasi madali i-adopt sa movie kasi maikli lang ang mga stories mostly. Adopt PHR stories from this authors kasi babgay talaga ky Jame and Nadine. And I bet they can play the role well.
PHR authors: Sheena Rose, Sonia Francisca, Sofia, Vanessa and Arielle.

  9. I agree with what you have said. I also think na masyadong rushed ung pagkakagawa ng latest movie ng JaDine kung sana hindi gipit sa oras ung production baka nagawan pa ng paraan na maayos ung flow nung story.Anyway I hope Viva would consider all the things that you have said in this blog. I would also like to add to the recommendations of stories that I think is suitable for JaDine to portray. First, I think Voiceless matches both the characters of James and Nadine. Aside from being a love story, it would also give a chance to JaDine to showcase their musical talents on the big screen itself and not just in movie OSTs. I also think that it is just the right amount of kilig and drama... with a touch of comedy na sa palagay ko magugustuhan ng audiences, both reader and non-readers alike. The second movie I would like to suggest is Mapapansin Kaya. This story is somewhat like DNP in the sense that the female protagonist started as an ugly duckling. However, unlike the other two movies of the two, the male lead in this story is actually a good guy, albeit a playboy at the start of the story, that came from the province. It would provide James with a different image outside of the box of being a bad boy. This story too has musical inclination since James would play an aspiring vocalist that reached stardom in hopes of establishing himself enough to be in league with his love interest. Both stories also have a sub-context regarding fans which made it interesting for me.In Voiceless, it showcases how a fan's love and support for her idols can uplift their spirits in times that they are ready to give up and encourage them to continue, and when this adoration is taken for grated can also cause the downfall of the idol's career. In Mapapansin Kaya, the opposite is observed, it shows how fans have boundaries and if fans overstep their limits this might push their idols to leave the limelight in order to protect their love ones from the bashing/bullying of the fans. Between the two stories I prefer the second one more because I believe it would allow the actors to be challenge with the dramatic scenes of the book. It would also allow the love team more mature roles that doesn't involve so much cussing and gang fights. Also I believe the story line of this particular book is flexible enough that the screenwriter will not have a hard time working out the details for the movie without disappointing the fans of the book. Aside from this, i wish that the fans will be able to gain awareness about their limitations as fans when they get to see how they hurtful words and actions can be perceived by their idols and put a damper, if not a stop to fan wars. As for the next director of the movie, i wish they would follow in the footsteps of the international book adaptation films like HP, HG, twilight, Percy Jackson, Divergent and Beautiful Creatures among other series. I didn't mention books by Nicholas Sparks because those are just short books which are easier to fit into a two hour movie. The ones I did mention were executed in a way that satisfies the viewers’ expectations as well as makes it understandable for both the readers and non-readers of the book despite having lots of twists and turns in the plot. Sorry for my super long comment. Just had a lot to say about the issue of JaDine's next movie project :)

  10. As for my opinion, being so disappointed with the TBYD and nasayangan tlga ako skanila because I read the book after watching the movie and it was really for them. The characters, the scenario, the craxy trios and lucky 13. Sam there is like Eya na naging mayaman who is funny and na in love kay Top besides the gangster attitude na nakakaturn off tlga. Anway, enough with the turning back. You've said it well na with ypur last blog. What i would like to suggest now is a TBYD series.. NTBG is thumbs up for me on their next movie as long as dpat makuha uli nila ung attention ng mga nadisappoint sa TbYd movie.. na masasabi nila na "ang cute pala ng story nakakakilig gusto ko panoorin ung life nila after mabulag".. that would convince them to watch part 2. Kasi if NTBG will be a flop next year, mhrap n uli kunin twla ng ibang tao.. kaya sna after may app boyfie, before they do NTBG, bumawi sila sa readers and non readers na nadisappoi nt kasi marami pa jan ang hnd pa makamove on at isa na ako doon. Super nagustuhan at natuwa kasi ako sa TBYD books na binasa ko. While reading the book, it's like the movie is playing in my head parang totoong sila ung nagaact sa imagination ko. And ang sarap isipin na gawing teleserye primetime. Tama sila.. madrama na ang buhay ng mga pilipino. Let Jadine bring the positivity, smile and kilig sa mga gabi natin=)

  11. One more thing pala.. sana wag nanaman nila madaliin.. lahat sila talented.. Direk andoy, keiko aquino, Jadine and Alesana's story is so good tlga.. nakakatuwa basahin. I'm 29 and a mother of 2. My husband and I make it sure na we keep the fire burning.. we've been couple for 9 years and still we're like newly wedded couple, we're like bf gf parin.. and it Jadine makes me bring back memories. It feels so good to be young again. Kaya sana wag nila sayangin ang talent ng Jadine na magpasaya ng ibang tao. Kasi may kakaiba silang chemistry and they have the whole package. Di katulad ng iba na hanggang acting lang.. more acting workshops.for Nadine pls.. i know marami pa syang characters na pwede ilabas.. mrmi pa sya emotions na pwede ipakita.. and she can still develop body movements that could support her acting.. sana alagaan sila ng mabuti ng Abs Cbn at sana wag pumayag si Boss Vic na panay hnd pinagisipa ang projects na ibbgay sknla..=)

  12. I'm going for your Option C.... Until they (Jadine) have fully established their careers, then they can let go of the Book king and queen image...

    ReplyDelete
  13. OH MY GOD! I disagree. I cannot imagine myself watching JaDine as the cast of My Husband Is A Mafia Boss, because i would gladly prefer if it's a romantic movie not a gangster theme one. (Don't be offended JaDine fans on the things that i wrote.)
